This past June the Uniteens and YOU’s were very busy building this year’s boat for the Cardboard Cup Regatta! This year 10 enthusiastic teens and 6 dedicated adults worked 15 days, approximately 220 hours to build our Award Winning Boat design! The boat’s theme was based on the classic children’s book “Where the Wild Things Are.” The boat was approximately 7 ½ feet long by 5 ½ feet wide. It carried four rowers, three life size monsters and “Max” in his sail boat! The sails announced “Wild about Unity” and “Let your Imagination Roar!” This year’s theme tied in very well to the 12 Powers curriculum the Uniteen’s have been discussing. The power of imagination was the driving factor in the creation of this Award Winning Boat!

This project and event is a total team effort! It was my pleasure to lead it again this year. Special “Thanks” goes out to the teens and adults who’s hard work made this Award Winning Boat possible! And to all the parents and grandparents who provided transportation and support to their teens in getting them to work on the project! Thanks to the Freeman’s for their contribution of a Menard’s gift card, it went toward the costs of boat building supplies! Thanks to our board of directors and the Youth & Family Ministry Council for budgeting money to help fund this project again this year. Thanks to the Wagner’s for helping with cardboard and boat transportation on a number of occasions! Thanks to Lisa and Denise for allowing us to use their garage space to paint our boat. And to the owners of the building we rent from at Korte Architecture, who let us use the vacant office space next to Korte to build our boat! Thanks to Jacob Cichy for being our photographer at the event and creating a CD slide show to record the fun moments of the event! And last but not least to my Dad, Sam Pizzuto, for his help with designing, and making the necessary calculations to ensure that the Award Winning Boat stayed afloat!

Did I mention it was an Award Winning Boat? We had the honor of receiving a first place trophy for “Most Creative Theme” AND a first place trophy for “The People’s Choice Award!” It was a fun and rewarding experience for everyone involved! Each year we create a boat continues to be a wonderful bonding opportunity for the teens and teachers. The enthusiasm is contagious, and as soon the event was over, the teens began brainstorming ideas for next year’s boat! We already have an idea…. But you’ll have to wait until next June to find out how great it is!!
