HOW THE STORY CIRCLE PROCESS WORKS
The Story Circle is a formalized way of telling about one’s experiences. For each session, there is a topic, and everyone tells a story, based on his or her personal experience, that relates to the topic.
Simply put, the Story Circle is a small-group activity designed to engage people in sharing their life stories with others.
It is predominantly a group listening activity. Listening creates a time for group members to be profoundly present for each other.
To clarify what the Story Circle IS, we need to define what it is NOT.
- Story Circles is NOT a:
- Discussion group
- Support group
- Chance for participants to polish their speaking skills
- Platform for people to espouse their favorite cause
Story Circle Policies
- No more than 10 participants in a group
- There is a five-minute time limit for each speaker
- You may choose not to speak or to speak for less than five minutes if you so desire
- A timer is used as a general guide to help the group share their time equally
- Only one participant may speak at a time, and please, no interruptions, questions, comments, or advice giving
- The point of a Story Circle is for each person to tell his/her story, not to comment on what the other person has said.
Some previous Story Circle topics:
