Hello Friends,
Is humanity ready for a transformation of consciousness, an inner flowering so radical and profound that compared to it, the flowering of plants, no matter how beautiful, is only a pale reflection? Can human beings lose the density of their conditioned mind structures and become like crystals or precious stones, so to speak, transparent to the light of consciousness? Can they defy the gravitational pull of materialism and materiality and rise above identification with form that keeps the ego in place and condemns them to imprisonment within their own personality?
These are questions posed by Eckhart Tolle in his revolutionary book A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. He states that “Most crawling reptilians, the most earthbound of all creatures, have remained unchanged for millions of years. Some, however, grew feathers and wings and turned into birds, thus defying the force of gravity that that held them for so long.” And then makes a most important point; “They didn’t become better at crawling or walking, but transcended crawling and walking entirely.”
I am not alone in my belief that if we humans expect to add an appreciable amount of time to our existence, as a race, we need to transcend the collective consciousness that admittedly has created spectacular leaps in technology and abundance for a relative few, but has done so in an environment of war, poverty and neglect for too many of earth’s inhabitants and the earth itself. To transcend that consciousness will require us not to become better at what we do, but instead, doing something that’s better for the majority of all creatures that rightly ask for existence on this planet.
In my series of Sunday talks titled “New Thought and A New Earth,” I’ll be comparing the author’s ideas and teachings about releasing ourselves from our egoic consciousness and finding our life’s purpose, with those of New Thought in general and Unity in particular. It is in this release that the promise of a new earth is birthed and may well flourish; one where we release our egoic thinking, which unlike nature, does not know when to stop in its pursuit of expansion and has voracious appetite for more.
In invite you to join me on a perilous journey. At least it feels perilous, for after reading through A New Earth once, I have come to realize the familiarity and superficiality of a life based on the world of form. And so, as we travel through these remarkable, life-changing pages together, let us support one another and take the risk of transcending our current belief systems to open ourselves to our true inner purpose, which the author states is “beyond human comprehension.” Let’s go for it together!
In Christ,
Rev Tom
